first sickness
Well, we knew this day would come, we just didn't think it would happen so early! Marshall has been feeling pretty crummy the past couple of days, with a runny nose and cough. Two nights ago he couldn't sleep and was getting up every two to three hours at night, which actually these days isn't like him anymore. Last night he got up every hour and a half to two hours. Today I was able to get the day off from my clerkship responsibilities to stay home with him, but he spent it screaming. He just cried and cried, and only stopped to doze and eat. He refused to be put down and wanted to snuggle. I was absolutely exhausted from putting in the long hours on the Labor and Delivery unit at the hospital, but I didn't get a chance to sleep today because he kept waking up every couple of minutes to cry. Poor little guy. This afternoon I decided to listen to my "mother's intuition" and take him to the doctor. It turns out he has a nasty ear infection. His pediatrician gave us some antihistamine nasal spray to help with his runny nose, and an antibiotic. He's already acting better. Thankfully I don't have to go back into work until Monday, so we'll get some quality time in. It was a hard day today to have him be so upset. After only spending an hour with him per day for the past week, I was starting to feel like a pretty lousy mom. At first I thought he was crying because he didn't remember who I was or he missed his daycare provider, Sarah. That broke my heart. I started to realize that I'm not the one he spends the majority of his time with anymore and that was hard. Oh well. I'm just going to try to make the moments we do have together count.
