As many of you know, I take the Boards on June 11th, and then start my clerkships in the hospital in late June. As 2nd-year medical students we have a choice as far as whether we would like to complete our 8-week clerkships (Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Family Medicine) first, or our 4- and 6-week rotations (Geriatrics, Neurology, Psychiatry, Pediatrics, OB/GYN) first.
When I submitted my preference, I indicated that I would like to complete the 8-week rotations first, since those rotations typically involve the longest hours, and I'd rather complete them when I'm pregnant, as opposed to when we have a newborn at home. Some of those rotations involve 36 hour shifts and 100-hour work weeks, and I simply couldn't leave our baby at home with Jordan alone with all that responsibility, 40 miles away.
I knew that my request might be pushed to the wayside, since Jordan and I were only trying to get pregnant. So, today, I re-submitted my request (they were due on February 20th...) so that they could reconsider it before the assignments are made official on March 1st. If I'm selected to have my 8-week rotations first, I would complete two of them, then take the third one off, and make it up at the end of the year, before I start my 4th-year rotations. This means that I would be done with school on October 17th, and that I wouldn't have to go back until January 3rd! That's 11 weeks! It would be so amazing to get to spend all that time at home with the baby... keep your fingers crossed!!
Oh, and for everyone concerned- I would still graduate on time. Thanks to all the extra classes I've taken (my internship, medical Spanish, etc.) I have racked up enough credit to take off 8 weeks (aka, one of my rotations).
