Houston, do we have a go for launch?

So today was my follow-up visit with Student Health. Though I've probably actually had more classes in infectious disease than the health professional that spoke with me today, the appointment was still beneficial.

It turns out that the inactivated typhoid vaccine is still available in the US-- they hoard it at places like the Health Department for high-risk patients, so I waltzed into our health department this evening and received this vaccine. Since it's an inactivated vaccine, there is no known reason as to why we would have to delay pregnancy, which is great news!

I received a prescription for my anti-malaria prophylaxis today too. The script is for chloroquine, which is actually the drug that physicians administer to pregnant women if they contract malaria, so it too is safe during pregnancy.

Lastly, I was also given a prescription for ciprofloxacin, should I encounter traveler's diarrhea, which is not known to be associated with teratogenicity, so that's safe too!

So... long story short... it looks like we're cleared to start trying (from an immunological standpoint, anyway)! Obviously for general health reasons it's probably better not to be pregnant and travel to another country, but I'm only going to be gone for a week. Normally when I travel abroad I maintain that the beer is safer than the water, but now I'm not so sure. :)
