I won't give too much away, for those of you who are going to go watch it, but there were some things that I found to be incredibly disturbing. One of the characters in the film is a toddler with Down's Syndrome. In one scene of the film, she's sitting on the couch and the grandmother is swearing at her, calling her a mother f-er, etc, etc. Ugh. In another scene, this same grandmother, THROWS A NEWBORN INFANT ON THE CHAIR. The child's mother later falls down several flights of stairs, with this newborn in tow. The grandmother subsequently attempts to DROP A TV on them from above. Additionally, the main character, a 16 year old girl, has been the victim of rape by her own father SINCE SHE WAS 3 YEARS OLD.
I was sobbing watching this movie. I was completely appalled.
I've become increasingly interested in pursuing a career in pediatrics, and was interested to discover that there is a rotation in Child Abuse Medicine at Childrens Mercy Hospital in Kansas City that I can take part in next year. But, after watching this movie today, I quickly realized that I could not deal with hearing about and seeing children being abused. Maybe it's because I'm a mother or just a decent human being, but I felt wretched after watching this movie. It certainly made me grateful for the wonderful home life that I was born into and that I am providing for Marshall. Here are some more pictures from our time in Washington this week:
Jessi warned Jen not to watch Precious; she knew Jen couldn't handle it. I was also sobbing while watching it; it is very disturbing.
ReplyDeleteCould we please see some pics of Marshall and Grandma? Glad you're having a great spring break!
I think I'll skip that movie. I used to transcribe the child protection notes and there are some things you can never forget, no matter how hard you try. At least you had a good time with family.
