Vacation 2011

I have to apologize for the major lapse in blog posts recently! Especially to those of you for whom this is your only way to see pictures of our growing boy.

We've been very busy! On May 21st I graduated from medical school. My entire family made the trek to Kansas City to help us celebrate. It was so great to get to see everyone. Then, after a nice long weekend with everyone, Jordan, Marshall, the dogs and I drove to Colorado to visit his family. We spent a few days in Denver and then headed up to the lake in Wyoming for a few days of rest and relaxation. It was a great time, even though the weather was a little chilly and we couldn't get in the water. After Wyoming, we headed to Iowa to visit our besties from college. After a few days, we were back in Kansas City for only a few days before Marshall and I flew to Seattle to visit my family for my younger brother's high school graduation. It's been a whirlwind month of traveling, and I think Marshall and I both are glad to be sleeping in our own beds once again.

Congratulations, Davis!

Marshall, plugging his ears, as we drove through a storm on the way to Colorado.

Today I started residency orientation. I'm filled with so many different feelings, it's difficult to describe- I'm excited, I'm nervous, I'm anxious, I'm scared- but mostly I'm concerned about how my commitment to medicine will affect my family. I received my schedule today, and it looks like I'll be working from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm six days a week for the months of July, September, October, January, February, April and May this academic year (those are my inpatient months). One of those months is a month of night shifts, from 6:00 pm to 7:00 am. During my day shifts, every other weekend I'll have the pleasure of working some odd shifts, like 10:00 pm to noon the next day, which is the shift I get to start out with for two days, or 6:30 am to 10:30 pm. On my outpatient months my schedule will be a little bit better, but it's just daunting to think about all the responsibility that will put on Jordan. It means that I'll never be the one to drop off or pick up Marshall from daycare. It means that I'll only cook Marshall breakfast and dinner one day per week. It also probably means I'll only be able to give Marshall a bath one day per week. And, it means that Jordan will largely be responsible for keeping the house clean, mowing the lawn, buying the groceries, etc. It's only five years... right?

Speaking of things I'll be missing out on/burdening Jordan with, Marshall is being evaluated for ear tube placement tomorrow by the ENT specialists. He hasn't been sick with an ear infection or otherwise since the beginning of May, but because that was his 6th ear infection in 18 months of life, the pediatrician referred us for evaluation. Jordan gets to take him to the appointment while I spend the day in computer training courses at the hospital.

I'm just going to have to make sure that I make our time together truly count and leave whatever frustrations I have at work.
